Vincenzo’s Roofing installs and replaces siding on residential and commercial properties across New Hampshire from our base in Seabrook. We remove the old siding rather than covering it, because covering hides rotted sheathing and traps moisture in the wall where it does the most damage.

Coming at siding from roofing gives us a particular advantage at the junction where the wall meets the roof. That transition, along with the flashing around windows and doors, is where the large majority of siding related water damage begins. It is also the detail most commonly rushed.

One or two of these may only need a repair. Several together usually mean the wall behind is already taking on water.

Cracked or broken panels

Any break in the surface is a direct route for water into the sheathing. Cold makes older vinyl brittle and prone to splitting.

Panels pulling away or rippling usually means moisture behind the siding or an installation that left no room for movement.

If the wall gives when pressed, the sheathing underneath has already rotted. This one needs attention quickly.

What Sits Behind Your Siding

Siding is the visible layer of a system with several parts. When a wall fails it is almost never the panel that caused it, so this is what we install and inspect on every job.

Sheathing

The structural board fixed to the framing. We inspect all of it once the old siding is off and replace anything soft, delaminated, or rotted before going further.

House wrap

The weather resistant barrier that sheds any water getting past the siding while still letting the wall breathe. Overlapped and taped correctly, or it does nothing.

Flashing

Metal detailing at windows, doors, and the roof to wall junction. This is where most water actually enters a wall, and where corners get cut most often.

Trim and starter

Corner posts, J channel, and the starter strip that sets the line for every panel above it. Get the first course wrong and the whole wall follows it.

The siding

Fastened with room to expand and contract through a New Hampshire year. Nailed too tight and panels buckle in July or crack in January.

Why it often makes sense

The junction where the roof meets the wall is responsible for a large share of the leaks we get called out to. Detailing that transition correctly is far easier when both surfaces are open at the same time. You also get one schedule, one crew, one disruption, and a single point of responsibility if anything ever needs revisiting.

When to keep them separate

If one of the two has real service life left, there is no sense replacing it early just for convenience. We will tell you honestly if your roof has eight good years in it, even though combining the work would be the larger job for us.

What New Hampshire Does to Siding

The same panel behaves very differently in Seabrook than it does inland. These are the details we adjust by location.

Salt air on the Seacoast

Salt corrodes standard nails and flashing well before the siding itself is worn out. On coastal jobs we specify stainless or coated fixings and corrosion resistant flashing as standard, not as an extra.

Wind driven rain

A nor’easter pushes water sideways and upward, finding gaps that ordinary rainfall never reaches. Correct overlap on the house wrap and properly lapped flashing matter far more here than in a sheltered climate.

Freeze and thaw movement

Vinyl expands and contracts measurably between a January night and an August afternoon. Fastened without room to move, panels buckle in summer and crack in winter. Nailing technique decides this.

Snow sitting against walls

Drifted snow banked against the base of a wall keeps it wet for weeks. Proper clearance at grade and a correctly installed starter strip stop that moisture wicking up behind the siding.

Quality vinyl siding lasts roughly 25 to 40 years here. Fiber cement typically reaches 30 to 50 years, and engineered wood around 20 to 30 years. Coastal properties sit at the lower end of each range because salt air is hard on fasteners and finishes. Installation quality and the condition of the weather barrier behind the siding matter as much as the material itself.

Vinyl is a lightweight plastic panel that costs less, installs faster, and never needs painting. Fiber cement is a dense composite of cement and cellulose that is heavier, more impact resistant, fire resistant, and holds paint for many years. Fiber cement costs roughly double vinyl installed and gives a closer match to real wood, which is why it is common on higher value and historic homes.

It is sometimes done, but we do not recommend it. Covering old siding hides any rot, mould, or water damage in the sheathing underneath, prevents proper installation of the weather barrier, and can trap moisture inside the wall. We remove the existing siding so the sheathing can be inspected and the house wrap and flashing installed correctly.

Most residential siding projects in New Hampshire take one to two weeks. A modest home in vinyl can be finished in under a week, while a larger house in fiber cement with significant trim detail takes longer. Weather is the main variable, and your written estimate includes a realistic timeline for your specific home.

If both are near the end of their service life, doing them together is usually the better decision. We do install siding in winter when circumstances require it, working in sections so the house is never left exposed overnight.
